Fun in the Snow

Public School Loppet a Great Success

 Submitted by Phil Brackenbury

On Tuesday, February 1, representatives from 8 elementary schools across Lanark County converged at Murphys Point Park to meet and compete in the Annual Public School Loppet. In all 92 students from grades 2 – 8 participated on a beautiful winter day. The trail conditions were superb thanks to the recent snowfalls and the expertise of the indomitable grooming crew of the Tay Valley Cross Country Ski Club.

Students competed in two age divisions over a two kilometre course open to both skate and classic styles and demonstrated both skill and sportsmanship. Many young skiers were competing for the first time and completed the circuit with
determination and wide smiles.

All skiers retired to the warmth of the chalet for lunch and individual and school awards. Following the awards, schools headed out in smaller groups for pleasurable tours to soak in the beautiful scenery.

Thanks to the Tay Valley Ski Club for their support and to the staff of Murphys Point. Hopefully this event helped foster a love of the sport and introduced many local skiers to the amazing facilities of Murphys Point.
