Volunteers Needed

As you probably are aware, the Friends of Murphys Point Park are holding a Heritage Mica Festival at the park over 4 weekends at the end of the summer (the last two weekends in August and the first two weekends in September). A lot of work has gone into planning the activities for this festival and a full schedule can be found at www.friendsofmurphyspoint.ca and click on Mica Festival. A Summary Schedule is attached which may be helpful to you in understanding the variety and nature of the various events of the festival. We were fortunate to receive funding support from the Ministry of Tourism to enhance the one day festival that was held in August 2010. Tay Valley Township has also supported the festival financially and Ontario Parks has been extremely generous with in-kind support.

As the dates for the festival approach, we hope that some volunteers from our sister organization, the Tay Valley Cross Country Ski Club, will step forward to assist in a number of ways. Training will be provided where needed and you will be provided with a volunteer t-shirt or a heritage costume to wear, depending on the nature of your duties. Also, the park has arranged to provide special entrance permits for you for the shifts that you are volunteering if you don’t have a seasonal day use pass. We can arrange for couples, families and friends to volunteer together. Volunteering is a great way to see the festival action up close.

You may wish to review the attached document and determine the days/times that are of interest to you or fit your schedule.

Some examples of help needed on specific occasions are as follows:

1. Information tent at the Park Gate at pre-determined times during the festival weekends. This position will answer questions about the festival and provide directions to the festival venue for campers and other arriving guests.
2. Assisting with our “Silver Lining” theatre piece by handing out lanterns, taking tickets, and directing people to the next scene along the trail (Aug 20 and Sept 3)
3. Assisting with cooking or serving at the various food events (BBQs, corn roast, hot dog roasts and pancake breakfast – see schedule attached for dates)
4. Greeting guests at the Lally Homestead Heritage Day (Aug 27)
5. Greeting guests at the three concerts at the amphitheatre (Aug 27, Sept 4, Sept 10)
6. Taking tickets and signing up participants for the Voyageur Canoe rides (Aug 28, Sept 4,  and Sept 11)
7. Assisting with the olde-tyme carnival (Sept 10) – examples include sand-castle-building, games of croquet, face-painting, bean bag toss and other carnival games

We welcome volunteers of all ages and can provide credit for community service hours for high school students.

Please contact me as soon as possible to indicate your availability so we can fill all the volunteer  time slots prior to the festival beginning.

Thanks to everyone who is able to help out. Your support is appreciated. I look forward to hearing from you.
